A-way
2012
Found mammogram x-rays, photographs, single channel video, and speakers.
Variable

"A-way" was an installation exploring the possible meaning of the word, "away".

This consisted of single channel video images of photographs of discarded x-rays (mammograms from the 1970s) flickering like a moth to a flame in a dark, cramped, corner cubby. The only light in the space comes from the round moon-shaped breasts in the x-ray image on the monitor while a cold mechanical sound is heard. The still photographs of the mammograms hang above while the medical envelopes that were used to protect the x-rays, reveal the personal information of the female patient (the names have been removed by the artist) are scattered on the floor, activated by the observer/participants' movements as they become aware of them and the mechanical sound quickly evolves into a flutter.

Using found x-rays, photos of the x-rays, video of the photos, and an audio element to deconstruct/construct/reconstruct a moment in time/history/memory/space to share an experience illustrating the concept of "away" with the participation of the viewer.

Themes: Light, shadow, loss, gain, life & death, public versus private, what or who is disposable, and the definition of "away".
